​THE 6 PRINCIPLES
​OF PILATES

There are six main principles that set the practice of Pilates apart from other regimens. The ultimate goal is that practitioners will carry these principles with them out into the world, instead of confining them to the studio.
  • Concentration – The first principle centers around finding focus and intent and creating a deeper awareness of the movement.
  • Centering – This principle guides us to move with efficiency. It is the understanding of how to move from a stable source by focusing on the core and back muscles.
  • Control – Through control we learn to pay attention to every detail and complete each action with intent and purpose.
  • Breath – Your breath is your life, but proper breathing is also essential to core support.
  • Precision – There is a saying that “the devil is in the details” and precision is all about those details. Every movement is scripted and should be executed with exact precision and focus; this maximizes the effectiveness of each movement and creates a heightened sense of awareness of the body as a whole.
  • Flow – This principle focuses on the transitions between each moment and allowing the motions to flow seamlessly into one another.
